Be A Hero In A Medieval Knight Costume
There are many inspiring tales of knights rescuing damsels in distress and carrying them off on their horses. What better way to fulfil a woman’s fantasy than dressing up in a Medieval knight costume for Halloween or other dress up event.
The romantic idea of a chivalrous knight comes from the concept of knight-errant which arose in medieval chivalric romantic literature from the 14th century. It was first use in the poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. One famous knight-errant was Don Quixote from the famous book by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel relates his various quests. A knight-errant would typically go on his adventues in the name of a lady – he would be very romantic and heroic.
A knight’s training usually began as a young boy. The boy would be sent to a castle to be trained as a page in addition to learning the skills he would need such as riding, fighting with a spear and sword, and wrestling. The next step up the ladder was to become a squire for a full knight. This would happen when he was around 15 years old. What duties did a squire have? He was basically a dogsbody for his knight, preparing his meals, keeping his armour in top condition and caring for his horse. As well as serving his knight, the squire would also learn how to wear armor and fight with a sword. At the age of 20, if worthy, he would get the status of knight with his own set of armor.
Dressing in a shining armor costume would certainly be fun especially as no-one would know who you were. You have to be strong to wear full armor and to be able to move freely. Armor can be very restrictive. There are therefore many other great medieval knight costumes available that are a little less restricting. There are some amazing and realistic costumes. They look just like real chainmail. Usually the tunic and helmet were made of interlinked and riveted rings of metal to make them more defensive. You can’t be a knight without having a sword and shield and being ready to defend your honor.
